This speech was very good. Historic, yes. But I can’t help but notice that he is preaching to choir. Israel wants peace. Heck, its surrounded by enemies; who wouldn’t want peace? It has given up land in exchange for peace but its neighbors regularly turn their back on this. This is no fault of Obama. But when you place all of the burden of peace on a nation that has already and continually sought it, what do you expect to change? Yes, the palestinians have a right to self determination - and they used that right to elect governments such as Hamas who’s charter calls for the obliteration of Israel; a government who kills their own then blames Israel; who brainwashes their children; a government who shoots rockets (daily) at Israeli citizens then cries foul when the hammer falls. Here is a government that said "if Obama visits Temple Mount, it will be deemed a declaration of War" - Hamas.
Pressure for peace should be placed on Israel - because it has the tools and institutions readily and available - but that’s only kicking them on their backsides for pursuing what they already desire. Pressure needs to be placed on the palestinian leadership to come to the table and play the game as a civilized state. While it is good for Israeli’s to “place themselves in [palestinian] shoes” - the world needs to “place themselves in [Israeli] shoes.” Since their wall of separation has been put up, when have you last heard of a bus bombing in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv - once a regular occurrence. You expect them to take that down because “it’s mean” or “restricting?” Doubtful. I can go on, but good speech in all by Obama - in some rights - unfortunately, it will be deemed as naive and ineffective for those who need the biggest kick in the behind were not sitting in the room.
Students are flocking to a fledgling Hebrew program sponsored by Gaza’s Hamas-run government, encouraged by their parents who learned Hebrew through years of working in Israel.
“[Israel is] more developed than us, so we can get benefits out of it – in terms of science, in terms of culture,” says Mohamed Suleiman Abu Shqair, the deputy minister of education in the Hamasgovernment. “This is also to prove to the rest of the world … that we are open-minded, even to teach our enemy’s language in our schools.”
“We are not looking for developing things with the Israelis, we are learning Hebrew to protect ourselves and to defend our country from the Israeli occupation,” says Maysam El-Khateeb, a Hebrew teacher at the Hassan Salma co-ed school in Gaza City. Citing a popular proverb, she adds, “As we say, if you know the language of the other nations, you will protect yourself from their hatred and evil work.”
The Islamo-fascist terror organization Hamas issued a warning on Friday that if President Obama even visits the Temple Mount on his upcoming trip to Israel, it will be considered a declaration of war.
from Arutz Sheva:
The Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror groups threatened on Friday that a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama to the Temple Mount during his upcoming visit to Israel will be a declaration of war on the Arab and the Islamic world.
A Hamas representative in the Al-Aqsa mosque, Mushir al-Masri, even called for a third intifada (uprising) and for Egyptian assistance in the “resistance” if Obama chooses to visit the Temple Mount.
According to the Bethlehem-based Ma’an news agency, the Gaza-based terrorist organizations made the threats during a protest march on Friday over the riots that broke out earlier in the day on the Temple Mount.
According to the report, Khalid al-Batash, a senior Islamic Jihad member, also called to prevent Obama from visiting the compound.
It should be obvious to just about anybody that the Hamas-led Palestinian authority has no desire for peace with Israel.
He has bowed to foreign kings, lets watch and see what happens here.
Good thing we gave Egypt some F-16s.
